We have always seen new restaurants mushrooming here and there, that we cannot keep a track of it. What is the new normal for restaurants with the COVID-19 pandemic and the impending lockdown across the globe? Social-distancing, Lockdown, coronavirus, and COVID-19 are some of the phrases now permanently etched into our lexicon, along with Contactless delivery and Food cravings, etc..…

India’s food services industry, currently estimated at $60 billion, is bigger than sectors such as railways, FMCG and consumer durables, among others
till, before the coronavirus shutdown, it was projected to grow at a CAGR of 9 percent and reach $100 billion within five years. Now nobody has a clue how this industry is gonna pan out.

Restaurants are tough businesses to operate in the best of times, and we are in the worst of the times now, so don't you think its time to have some plan for the future. Predicting the long-term impacts can help us better prepare ourselves, our business and our employees, even though there are just too many variables that are unknown right now, to be able to make forecasts for the future.

New Trends :

  1. Licensing and certifications will become very critical for Restaurant, Consumers choose restaurants with better sanitation and standards.
  2. Takeaways and Home deliveries will increase further ( dominoes has a 50% surge in sales across the globe, during the lockdown )
  3. Consumers will embrace Contact less delivery
  4. Consumers will priorities their health over the price
  5. Many of the fly-by-night cloud kitchen players will get impacted, as they don't have too many regulations like Dine out restaurants
  6. Consumers will expect more space between tables in dining out restaurants
  7. There will be an uptick in Veg only food and its adoption
  8. People might avoid self-service buffet, for possible contagions of free access to the food spread for all.
  9. 20% to 30% of the restaurants will not open up after the lockdown (Reason like to recruit the team would take time, would need working capital and be able to manage the loss of fixed expenses during the lockdown, etc)
  10. No Credit card transactions or Cash transactions, almost 100% of it will become contactless payments.
